Job Description:
- Execute survival and non-survival laboratory animal studies, including keeping appropriate records concerning those studies, and maintaining the equipment and facilities necessary for the successful progression of the research program.
- Place, maintain, and monitor animals under anesthesia while performing procedures.
- Broad range of technical skills involving various procedures with large and small animals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communicate with sponsors to plan and execute proposed testing
- Assists with coordinating experiment efforts within the animal facility and external CROs
- Uses imaging equipment (fluoroscope, ultrasound, CT, 3D scanner) to obtain images of test sites
- Trains other technicians and staff members on use of imaging equipment.
- Handle and restrain large animals (swine).
- Maintain animals under anesthesia and conduct procedures to include; medical device operation, catheter placement, drawing and analyzing blood samples, preparing intravenous solutions, fluid injection/infusion, minor surgical procedures, monitoring animals recovering from anesthesia, tissue resection, and necropsy.
- Responsible for execution of testing according to the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and protocols, and maintaining compliance with relevant quality system requirements, including GLP.
- Assist with writing and developing of new animal protocols and SOP’s.
- Document data collected to include study reports and publications.
- Engage in the development and execution of novel animal models and studies as well as the design and evaluation of new technologies for use in current and proposed studies.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent in biology/life sciences or related discipline.
- Experience: 1 to 3 years related experience in a biological laboratory.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
- Swine animal handling experience preferred.
- Experience with imaging equipment preferred.
- Clinical procedure experiences (venipuncture, catheter placement, blood draws, monitoring vitals, and administering medications)
Certification/Licensure:
- LATG certification preferred.
Other:
- Able to handle common laboratory species. Proficient in basic technical skills and the operation of data collection equipment.
- Knowledge of federal regulations and guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals.
- Basic understanding of study design and protocols.
- Computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
Physical Demands:
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Employees must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to and including 50 pounds; this includes work materials, equipment, and/or animals.
- Must be able to perform procedures, which require, talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (PPE) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.
Work Environment:
- General laboratory working conditions.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Works in a research environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles, noise levels are generally moderate.
